It's been months since I last flashed my SGS. ICS is not coming out for this model anytime soon, so I might as well get the latest Gingerbread release. Now I've always used RomKitchen ROMs, but after some research, I've decided to go with Surface. RomKitchen is not being developed much anymore since JVT, and it seems like it's only Tricky103 keeping it alive. He's also got a JVU ROM out, but no changelog. Surface ROM looks pretty neat with lots of features, and development is quite active. Download is only about 98MB. Face unlock, yeah!
For the kernel, I opted for Galaxian as it gives me the most amount of available RAM - 344MB, and that's without sacrificing the front camera and HD recording functionality. Tried it but it didn't work for me. Front camera is not able to save images, and the camcorder is not able to take pictures during recording. All I got are zero-byte JPGs. Switched to Semaphore, and that fixed it. RAM was reduced to 337MB though. Not a big deal as I'm not into games anyway.
Flashing procedure is pretty much the same as before. Do a hard-reset on the phone, then flash stock JVU (from SamMobile) via Odin. Flash a CWM-enabled kernel like Speedmod. Do another hard reset just to be sure. Reboot into CWM recovery, then install the Surface ROM. Reboot. Download Chainfire's EXT4 Tools and convert all paritions to ext4.
