Watched Ben Stiller in Heartbreak Kid with my special friend and family. Ben Stiller's not my favourite comedian, though he was good in Mystery Men and Dodgeball, so I thought I'd give him another chance. Nope, got lots of grey hair now, but still the same Ben Stiller. Didn't like his character Eddie, too. Eddie decides to marry this girl Lila because of peer pressure. Hours into his honeymoon at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, he realizes his wife is not who she was before the marriage, so he starts having second thoughts. First cute girl (named Miranda) he sees there, he starts flirting with her. Next thing you know, he's spends his days and nights with Miranda, yet he never tells her he's married. Well, if you believe in karma like me, you can probably guess what happened. His cover got blown, his wife burns his wallet and passport and leaves him in Mexico, and Miranda ditches him, too.
Against all odds, and in spite of the efforts of the border police, he manages to sneak across the border after the nth time, and make it to Miranda's house. Turns out she got married just two weeks ago. I wasn't expecting that because it seems so... so final. What else can a guy do? Anyway, Eddie loses his sporting goods store to Lila in the divorce, and he moves to Cabo to open a surf shop. One year later, guess who turns up? Miranda, still as cute as a year ago, and now single. She invites him over for a drink that night, and of course he says yes. Good news for Eddie, not for his current wife of 1 year (played by Eva Longoria).
Not the kind of ending I was expecting. What's the moral of the story? That it's ok to cheat on your partner if she's no good? That it's all right to terminate a marriage just because you've found someone better? I sure am old-fashioned.
