I'm sure a lot of the jokes and humour got lost in translation, but this French movie is still very very funny. I heard it's the highest-grossing French movie of all time. The plot is pretty simple: Philippe is caught lying in order to get a plum transfer to the Riviera office. As punishment, he was banished to Bergues, a town in the northernmost region of France, for two years. Once he got to know the friendly locals, it wasn't too bad at all. Even cried when he had to leave his post.
Lots of funny moments in the movie. The time when Philippe was pretending to be crippled and stuck to a wheelcar. Upon knowing that he passed the audit and about to get the transfer to Riviera, he stood up and shook the auditor's hand. Then there's the long skit when Philippe and his crew was trying to convince his wife how filthy and backward Burgues is, and how vulgar and boorish the locals are. What's touching is that the wife loved Philippe so much, she still decided to stay, which forced him to a confession.
