Audiobook 2011.07.30 - Pale Blue Dot

A very enlightening read from a very enlightened guy. Sagan starts off the book by going through how humans eventually discovered that we are not the centre of the universe. And what better way to develop this humility by studying the universe. He then proceeds to give us an introduction of the planets and the major moons, and whether these have a good chance of harbouring life or not. If none are found in the nearby planets, maybe we can start things off by colonizing them. If not the planets, then maybe the asteroids. Sagan also gives an introduction of the US space missions, especially Voyager. He shares some interesting anecdotes, how it was beset by technical problems mid-mission, and how human ingenuity always manages to save the day, etc.

"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
