Read the book, now I've watched the movie. As usual, the movie version doesn't do justice to the book. There's only so much you can put on the big screen. It's nice to put faces to the names (Westley and Buttercup, Inigo Montoya, Vizzini, Fezzik, Prince Humperdinck, etc.), but the locations and the sets are only so-so. I've seen other low-budget films that did better. You don't get the same excitement as with the book, and a lot of the details are glossed over.
If you're interested in The Princess Bride, I strongly suggest you read the book. Get to know the characters up close and personal, and get the full story.
