Funny, every time I see Pierce Brosnan on screen, I can't help but think of him as Secret Agent Double-O-Seven. It's been years since he retired from Her Majesty's Secret Service, and took on other roles in Thomas Crown Affair, The Tailor of Panama, and now The Matador - still he feels very much like Bond, James Bond. No such problems with Sean Connery, though.
In The Matador, Mr. Brosnan plays Julian Noble - a burnt-out killer-for-hire. Not your typical contract hitman or political assassin. As he mentioned, he does mostly corporate gigs. He flies around the world executing deals his boss made and doing time with the ladies. I told you it's the same job description as his former role. Anyway, he got burned out and started missing his hits, now his boss wants him dead. He goes looking for an acquaintance by the name of Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) he met at a bar in Mexico City, and asks him to help him with his last hit job. Out of gratitude and sympathy, Danny helps him execute the mark at a horse race.
Nothing special about this movie. Half of the movie time is devoted to showing how Julian and Danny got to know each other. They did a section in Manila, where Julian is supposed to kill this guy, but he started having hallucinations. I can tell you that place is NOT Manila. The cars and buses are different, the market crowd is different, and we don't spell it as "Restaurante". Skip this if you're not stranded on a plane with nothing else better to do.
