So what can you do with a Thinkpad X31 with no hard disk and no CD drive? USB boot, of course!
Using the Linux Live USB creator and armed with a Knoppix 6 iso, I was able to run Knoppix 6 off a USB drive. Knoppix was able to make use of the X31's WiFi straight off the live USB, so I was able to connect to the Internet and do some browsing. Too bad the included IceWeasel browser doesn't do Flash. GnomePlayer was able to play MP3s, but there was no video for my DivX AVIs. I'm still impressed though.
Next up, I might try to do a WinXP live USB, though I heard it's not that easy.
